SUPPORTING FAMILIES IN UGANDA

My family and I lived in Jinja, a small town in Uganda for two years from 2008 until 2010, and still remain in contact with some of the people we met there.
Whenever possible we like to support two of the Ugandan families we know, through the contributions that we can make, and through donations from individuals and organisations. I am fortunate to have a number of friends who followed the story of our adventures (some are recounted in an e-book about our first year of living there http://www.kimchamberlain.com/e-books-inspiration.html) and who send money over as they are able.
In addition, whenever I speak to non-profit organisations who cannot pay a speaking fee, I ask if they are able to give a donation, no matter how small, in the knowledge that 100% of the money will go to the families concerned.
Both families have been extremely grateful for all the support they have received.

Vicky and family

Vicky was my daughter's teacher, and was one of the best, most loving, and most dedicated teachers I have met. Not only does she have her own children to support, but also supports a number of orphaned children within her extended family.
My friends have been able to help support the children's education, and my husband and I have been able to donate a piece of land we bought when we lived there (picture below), that Vicky can use to build the family home and grow some crops.
Her response was very touching "I have been praying to God for a plot of land. God has used you both to answer my prayers. Thank you so, so much."

Jamin and family
I met Jamin when I was in discussions regarding setting up a community centre in Jinja. He and his wife have dedicated their lives to The Salvation Army and are instrumental in training others. They have several children to support. Education in Uganda is not free, and is in fact quite expensive compared to the average wage, and it is sometimes a struggle for them to raise enough money for their children's school fees.
I've received money from organisations such as Rotary, Sub Urban Co-working and Te Wananga o Aotearoa which have been gratefully received.
Below are a couple of emails I received from him after sending the donations (he calls me 'mum' - it's a sign of respect) plus a copy of his son's report card.
